Large cruise ships set a very different benchmark. Many carry thermal suites, saunas and hydrotherapy pools. A six-cabin phinisi cannot reproduce that, and it does not try to. What it offers instead is a treatment in complete privacy, timed around a dive or a quiet anchorage rather than a booking sheet.
Some yachts in the collection carry more wellness equipment than others across different tiers. Tier is set by cabin size, tenders, dive setup, crew ratio and dining style. Spa equipment plays no part in it.
Why are saunas and spa rooms rare on phinisi and expedition yachts?
The real limit is engineering. Every sauna or wet spa draws on the same power, water, weight and fire-safety capacity that keeps a yacht self-sufficient in remote water.
- Power: a sauna heater runs continuously. It adds to the hotel load already carried by air conditioning, the galley, the watermaker and the dive compressor.
- Freshwater: spas raise demand, which means larger watermakers and more generator hours. Wastewater systems manufacturer Hamann has estimated that overall yacht water use generates around 450 litres of wastewater per person per day.
- Structure and fire protection: water features add weight, and a heated room needs fire-rated boundaries inside a hull with little space to spare.
Think of a remote house running on solar panels and a battery. Leaving an electric oven on all afternoon is possible only if the system was sized for it. Otherwise something else gives way. On a yacht, that something is cooling or the compressor. This is why wellness hardware is usually decided when the yacht is built rather than added later.
These apply through Biro Klasifikasi Indonesia (BKI) classification and flag state rules. No maritime code is written specifically for onboard massage rooms.
How does onboard massage work on a private charter?
Since so few boats carry fixed spa hardware, massage is where most guests actually experience wellness on board. An Indonesian charter rate is all-inclusive. It covers the yacht, crew, meals, soft drinks, fuel for the agreed itinerary, water toys, dive equipment and divemasters. A massage therapist is excluded as standard, but some yachts include two to four hours of massage per day.
Several yachts in the collection offer massage options:
- Mutiara Laut lists massage for private charter.
- Aliikai lists massage on private charter when a guest cabin is available.
Credentials are worth asking about. Ask which massage qualification the therapist holds and whether they sail as part of the regular crew. Compliance is a contractual requirement on every vessel in the collection, and documentation for a specific yacht can be requested at quotation stage.
How should you choose a yacht if wellness matters to your charter?
With those mechanics in mind, decide how central wellness is before you build a shortlist. Nothing narrows the field faster.
Rank the need. A daily massage is available on some yachts and is confirmed per quotation. A sauna or ice bath limits you to a handful of yachts.
Match season and region. Komodo sails April to October and Raja Ampat November to April. They are separate trips. Different yachts serve different regions, so confirm that the wellness-equipped yacht you prefer sails your chosen region in your season.
Ask where treatments take place. An indoor room works in the evening or in a swell. A deck setup depends on weather and anchorage.
Confirm massage hours in writing. Massage is a vessel-dependent line on every quotation.
Pair recovery with diving. Scubaspa Zen pairs its spa with a dive centre and nitrox.
The most restorative charters choose the treatment room and the itinerary together.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do Indonesian private yachts have saunas?
Very few do. Wellness equipment is unusual across the collection.
Is massage included in the charter rate?
Not as standard. Some yachts include two to four hours per day, and this is confirmed per quotation.
Which yachts have a dedicated spa room?
Amandira, Samsara Samudra and Scubaspa Zen each list spa facilities.
Does wellness equipment determine a yacht's tier?
No. Tier reflects cabins, tenders, dive setup, crew ratio and dining. Spa or sauna facilities do not affect tier.
Why do so few yachts have saunas or spas?
They draw heavily on power and freshwater and need fire-insulated boundaries. Most phinisi were not designed around these demands.
Can a wellness charter cover both Komodo and Raja Ampat?
No. The two regions are separate trips in opposite seasons, each reached by its own flight. Each can be planned around a wellness-equipped yacht.
