The registration line is easy to overlook. A yacht that is not Indonesian-flagged cannot operate commercially inside Indonesia. The only exception is a cruise that starts or finishes outside Indonesian waters, which is possible but rarely convenient. Ownership structures vary by vessel, so what matters is that the registration is consistent with the yacht named in your agreement.
What does a seaworthiness certificate actually prove?
Of the documents in the table, the seaworthiness certificate is the easiest to misread. It confirms that the yacht passed an inspection covering hull integrity, engine performance, navigation equipment and life-saving apparatus.
A car's annual roadworthiness test works the same way. The test proves the brakes worked on inspection day and grants a year of legal use, but it says nothing about how the car is maintained afterwards. For that reason, the expiry date tells you more than the certificate's existence. A certificate that lapses mid-charter is a clear question to raise before signing.
- Private Indonesian-flagged yachts: the certificate rests on basic registry paperwork, tonnage measurement and local safety equipment compliance.
- Commercial yachts under IMO and SOLAS conventions: a stricter regime applies, with periodic class surveys, stability documentation, load line assignments and international crew certification.
- Classification society rules: some operators reference these, which involve plan approvals, staged hull surveys during construction and machinery inspections.
Vessel descriptions often cite build standards as well. Silolona and her sister Si Datu Bua were built to German Lloyds standards, and Kudanil Explorer lists GMDSS area 3 safety equipment. These describe how a yacht was designed and equipped. They complement a current certificate but do not replace one.
Which STCW crew qualifications matter on a charter yacht?
A sound hull is only as useful as the crew trained to operate its equipment, which is why crew certificates matter as much as vessel certificates. STCW, the international Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping, is the framework that sets training and certification requirements for seafarers.
On an Indonesian charter yacht, the captain typically holds an ANT-III or ANT-IV licence, while deckhands and other crew have completed STCW Basic Safety Training.
Crew certification and insurance are also linked. A lapse in crew paperwork can therefore affect the yacht's insurance position too.
A critical distinction separates STCW qualifications from dive credentials. Divemaster and instructor certifications come from dive training bodies, not from STCW. On a yacht where diving is central to the voyage, ask for those credentials separately.
How should you check the documents once they arrive?
The purpose is not to survey the yacht yourself but to confirm the paperwork is consistent and current. A structured read follows five steps.
First, match the identity: the vessel name, tonnage and flag should be identical across every certificate and your quotation. Next, check the dates, since each certificate should remain valid for the full charter, including the final night. Then reconcile the crew by comparing the crew list with the captain's licence, the STCW certificates and the seaman's books.
Review before committing. A yacht can be held for up to seven days while the agreement is signed, which leaves time to read the documents before the 30 to 50 percent deposit. Finally, ask while it costs nothing: a query at quotation is routine, while the same query after booking is harder to resolve.
Treated this way, the documents become part of choosing the right yacht rather than a formality after the choice is made.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I request compliance documents before booking?
Yes. Seaworthiness certificates, crew STCW qualifications and other compliance documents for a specific yacht can be requested at the quotation stage.
Is compliance a requirement across the whole collection?
Compliance is a contractual requirement on every vessel. Because the collection includes yachts the group does not manage directly, documents are requested for the specific yacht you are considering.
Do guests arrange marine park permits?
No. Permits and park entry are handled by the vessel and its agents during planning. National park fees are included on most yachts, so they are confirmed per vessel.
Can a foreign-flagged yacht charter inside Indonesia?
Not commercially. The exception is a cruise that starts or finishes outside Indonesian waters.
Is travel or dive insurance included in the charter?
No. Travel and dive insurance are excluded, and valid dive insurance is mandatory for divers.
What is STCW Basic Safety Training?
It is the foundational STCW safety course for seafarers, and deckhands and other crew on Indonesian charter yachts are expected to complete it.
About The Yacht Club Indonesia
The Yacht Club Indonesia, part of the YMA Yachting group, books privately owned luxury and ultra-luxury yachts and phinisi across Raja Ampat, Komodo, Alor, Sumbawa and the Spice Islands. Its collection is organised into Explorer, Luxury and Ultimate tiers. Tier is set by cabin standard, tenders, dive setup, crew-to-guest ratio and dining style, and compliance is a contractual requirement on every yacht in the collection. Each enquiry is handled by a named yacht charter expert who can request vessel-specific documentation as part of a transparent quotation.
