Figures as published by The Yacht Club, 2026. Ratios are calculated at full occupancy.
Why do two yachts with similar ratios deliver different voyages?
If headcount is only the surface, composition is what lies beneath it. Distinct crew roles range from captain and chief engineer to chef and steward, and the balance between them varies with the vessel. A sailing phinisi such as Lamima, carrying 1,277 m² of sail, needs deck hands to work the rig. A long-range former British naval vessel such as Aqua Blu needs engineering depth to sustain its range. Neither role pours a drink.
Galileo shows why the ratio cannot be read alone. It carries 0.9 crew per guest at full capacity, yet it sits in the Ultimate tier because tier is set by cabin size and en-suite standard, tender numbers, dive setup, crew ratio and dining style together. An expedition yacht with five cabins delivers a very different intimacy from a 15-suite vessel with a similar ratio.
Continuity matters as much as numbers. A captain and core team who have sailed the same yacht together for several seasons know its anchorages, its quirks and each other. That familiarity shapes the voyage as much as the crew count itself.
How does crew depth shape a Raja Ampat or Komodo yacht charter?
The value of a deep crew shows most clearly in the water. A typical dive day runs three to four dives, and private charters can dive up to four or five times a day. Each of those dives needs guides, tender drivers and someone refilling cylinders on the yacht.
For divers, the diver-to-guide ratio is the figure to ask for. Alila Purnama, for example, publishes a four-to-one diver-to-guide ratio. Tenders matter for the same reason. Two tenders and enough drivers to run them let divers, snorkellers and a family visiting a village each follow their own programme.
The two flagship regions ask different things of a crew:
- Raja Ampat yacht charter: Typically seven to twelve nights, sailed November to April from Sorong, in waters with limited mobile coverage. Sustained dive capacity and self-sufficiency count for more here.
- Komodo yacht charter: Typically three to six nights from Labuan Bajo, sailed in the opposite season as an entirely separate trip. Pace and tender logistics across a compact schedule matter most.
What should you ask about crew before confirming a yacht?
Building on the points above, the useful questions go beyond the headline ratio and are best raised at quotation stage:
- How many crew sail, and how many of them serve guests directly?
- What is the diver-to-guide ratio, and is there an instructor aboard for certification?
- How many tenders are there, and are drivers available for each?
- Is massage included? Some yachts include two to four hours a day.
- How long have the captain and core crew sailed this yacht together?
- Can STCW crew certificates and compliance documents for this specific yacht be shared?
Compliance is a contractual requirement for every yacht in The Yacht Club's collection, and documentation for a specific vessel can be requested at quotation stage.
How does crew size affect the private yacht charter price?
A deeper crew is one reason one yacht costs more than another, but it is a consequence of the voyage you choose rather than a line item. In Indonesia the private yacht charter price is a single, non-flexible rate per night. It covers the yacht, the full crew, chef-prepared meals, soft drinks, fuel for the agreed itinerary, water toys and planned excursions. No advance provisioning allowance applies.
Three things move the rate: the vessel itself (including its crew ratio, cabins, tenders and dive setup), the season, and the standard of service aboard. The cruising ground does not, and the nightly rate does not fall for longer charters. Crew gratuities are excluded and are left to the guest's discretion, typically 5 to 10 percent of the trip cost.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good crew-to-guest ratio for a luxury yacht in Indonesia?
Among the yachts profiled here, most top-tier vessels carry at least one crew member per guest at full capacity. How many of those crew serve guests directly is the more revealing figure.
Does a smaller group receive more attention on a private charter?
Generally, yes. Minimum crew is tied to the vessel's size and operating area, so a couple on a 14-guest yacht sails with a far richer ratio than the published one.
Is crew the primary factor in choosing a liveaboard yacht for Raja Ampat?
For divers, the diver-to-guide ratio, nitrox and tender count usually matter more than the overall crew ratio.
Are the crew included in the charter rate?
Yes. The full crew is included in the per-night rate. Gratuities are excluded.
Can I see crew certifications before booking?
Documentation for a specific yacht, including crew STCW qualifications, can be requested at quotation stage.
About The Yacht Club Indonesia
The Yacht Club Indonesia is a Bali-based team of yacht charter consultants curating luxury and ultra-luxury yachts and phinisi across Raja Ampat, Komodo, Alor, Sumbawa and the Spice Islands. Its collection is organised into Explorer, Luxury and Ultimate tiers, each defined by cabin standard, tenders, dive setup, crew-to-guest ratio and dining style rather than by destination. Each enquiry is handled by a named yacht charter expert who confirms crew and dive specifications early and builds a transparent, all-inclusive quotation around the yacht that suits the occasion.
