Raja Ampat's Four Island Groups: Planning an Itinerary Around Waigeo, Misool, Salawati and Batanta

Admin|02/10/2026

Raja Ampat is not one destination but four: Waigeo, Batanta, Salawati and Misool, scattered across roughly 40,000 square kilometers of the Bird's Head Peninsula's coastal waters. A well-built Raja Ampat itinerary does not try to visit all four in a single week. It picks a region, or at most two adjacent ones, and lets a liveaboard cover the ground a land-based trip never could. The choice between a Waigeo-based northern route and a Misool-anchored southern one is the single biggest decision in planning a Raja Ampat boat trip, and it should be made before a single dive site gets added to the schedule.

What Are Raja Ampat's Four Main Island Groups?

Raja Ampat means "Four Kings," a name referring to the four principal islands that frame the archipelago: Waigeo, Batanta, Salawati and Misool. Each has a distinct geography, and that geography is what should drive itinerary design, not a list of dive site names pulled from a map.

Waigeo is the largest of the four at roughly 3,155 square kilometers, dominated by dense rainforest interior and home to Waisai, the regional capital and main gateway town. Batanta sits just across the Dampier Strait to its south, smaller and quieter, known for jungle trekking and waterfalls rather than village life. Salawati lies closer to the Papuan mainland, with a mix of coastal and inland communities and comparatively less charter traffic. Misool, the southernmost of the four, is a different world again: karst islands rising sheer from the water, some of the archipelago's most photographed lagoons, and reef systems that many repeat visitors rate above the north.

That spread matters because Raja Ampat is governed as a network of Marine Protected Areas covering more than 2 million hectares, not a single contained park with one entry point. A route built around Waigeo and Batanta is a genuinely different trip, in different water, under different conditions, from a route built around Misool.

How Should You Decide Between a Northern and Southern Itinerary?

The decision comes down to distance and what each region does best, not personal preference alone. Sorong, the gateway port for nearly every Raja Ampat yacht charter, connects to Waisai on Waigeo by a two-hour express ferry across the Dampier Strait, making the north the more accessible starting region for most itineraries. Reaching Misool from Sorong is a different proposition entirely: around nine hours by slow public ferry, or roughly eight to sixteen hours aboard a liveaboard depending on routing and sea state.

That gap is the reason most itineraries do not attempt a genuine north-to-south circuit inside a single charter week. An overnight transit across open water between the island groups eats into diving and shore time that guests have paid a premium rate to use. The practical answer most experienced operators give is to pick one region as the spine of the trip and let the yacht's course radiate out from there, rather than chasing both ends of the archipelago on one itinerary.
