Before You Board and After You Disembark: How a Voyage Planner Arranges Hotels, Villas and Buffer Nights Around Your Charter

Admin|04/11/2026

Raja Ampat lies roughly three to five flying hours east of Bali and Jakarta, and the yacht waiting at Sorong will not delay its departure for a late connection. The best protection for a charter is one buffer night before boarding and one after stepping ashore, placed where the flight chain is weakest. For Raja Ampat that usually means Bali or Jakarta. For Komodo it means Labuan Bajo. The Yacht Club Indonesia's Voyage Planner team handles flight routing, airport transfers, hotels and villas around each charter, so the nights ashore get the same planning as the nights at sea.

What Is a Buffer Night, and Why Does a Charter Need One?

The most protective decision in charter logistics is the buffer night. This is a hotel stay booked immediately before or after the sailing, so that a delayed flight never costs a day at sea.

The mechanism works like flying on two separate tickets. When both legs sit on one booking and the first is delayed, the airline rebooks you onto the second. On separate tickets, the second carrier owes you nothing. A yacht departure behaves like that second ticket: crew, provisions and the first anchorage are set around a sailing time, and no airline is obliged to deliver you to it.

A buffer night turns a fragile same-day connection into an overnight one, and the overnight absorbs the delay. The ideal is to wake in the gateway with the whole morning in hand.

Where Should You Stay Before Boarding in Komodo and Raja Ampat?

Building on that principle, the right location for the buffer night depends on which leg of the flight chain is most exposed. The two flagship cruising grounds answer that question differently.

In Komodo, most charters run three to six nights and begin and end in Labuan Bajo. Flights from Bali take about an hour and a quarter, and the drive from the airport to the harbour is short. Sleeping in town the night before is simple, though in peak season the best Labuan Bajo hotels are often committed months ahead.

Raja Ampat works the other way round. Charters run seven to twelve nights, and about 70 percent sail Sorong to Sorong. The Yacht Club advises allowing two to three hours from landing to boarding, and it recommends the buffer in Bali or Jakarta rather than in Sorong. The fragile link is the flight into Sorong, and luxury rooms in the port towns are limited.
