Mutiara Laut Interior Designer Q&A: Gregory Galliard’s Vision and Inspiration

Which fabrics and materials have been used throughout the project and why?

For the renovation and refurbishment of the Mutiara Laut, I selected materials that highlight luxury while respecting Indonesia's authenticity and cultural richness. One of the main materials used is Kayu Ulin, also known as Ironwood, which is renowned for its exceptional durability and ability to withstand the harsh maritime environment. The yacht's structure incorporates 250 tons of this rare wood, preserving its historical integrity by maintaining the same species used in the original design. Teak wood, sourced from Indonesian forests, is another key material chosen for its timeless elegance and durability. Its rich, warm tones were used to redesign the interior spaces, creating an inviting and sophisticated ambiance. For the upholstery and draperies, I selected natural fibers like cotton and linen, which provide comfort and lightness, perfectly suited to the tropical climate of Indonesia. 

How does the Mutiara Laut connect to the local landscape and aesthetic of Indonesia?

The Mutiara Laut is deeply embedded in the Indonesian landscape and aesthetic, despite being the only sailing yacht/schooner of its kind in Southeast Asia. Key aspects that establish this connection include its traditional phinisi inspiration and seamless integration with nature. The yacht’s design draws from the traditional Indonesian phinisi boats, celebrated for their elegant two-masted schooner rig. This connection to the maritime heritage of Sulawesi imbues the Mutiara Laut with a sense of history and cultural pride. Additionally, the unique sailing performance combines traditional design with modern capabilities, offering an unmatched experience for purists and sailing enthusiasts. The yacht's expansive main deck fosters continuous interaction with Indonesia's stunning marine environment, allowing guests to seamlessly connect with the breathtaking landscapes of its small islands. Cultural authenticity is further emphasized through the use of local materials and traditional craftsmanship, with details such as handcrafted teak furniture and batik textiles, each telling a story of the region’s rich cultural heritage.

Several furniture pieces on the Mutiara Laut contribute to the yacht's luxurious and culturally rich atmosphere. Handcrafted teak chairs, made by local artisans, reflect Indonesia’s woodworking tradition and combine comfort with elegance, adding authenticity to the yacht’s decor. Solid teak tables, carved using traditional techniques, are robust and elegant, serving as both functional and beautiful elements throughout the interior and exterior spaces. These versatile tables cater to dining, relaxation, or simply enjoying the view. The generous outdoor areas, with 1000 square meters of sail providing ample shade, offer flexible relaxation spaces, ideal for soaking in the surroundings or finding solitude. The yacht's decor, intentionally simple yet unique, creates an inviting ambiance, with touches like batik fabrics and locally sourced art subtly celebrating Indonesian culture while maintaining a sophisticated aesthetic. 

Diverse beach setups further enhance the experience, providing everything from relaxed afternoons to family BBQs or elegant dinners for two. Every detail, from plush beach cushions to gourmet dining arrangements, is meticulously planned to ensure comfort and enjoyment. Luxury bedding with five-star hotel-grade quality ensures superior sleep, combining wooden structures and satin cotton drapes for a restful retreat. These beds celebrate local craftsmanship and add to the overall luxurious ambiance of the Mutiara Laut.

What are the color schemes of the design?

The Mutiara Laut's color palette is carefully curated to reflect the natural beauty of Indonesia. Deep beiges and natural whites highlight the preserved and refined wood tones, evoking the lush forests and rich artisanal heritage of the region. These hues create a warm and inviting atmosphere that celebrates the yacht’s connection to nature. Soft off-whites and creams introduce a sense of freshness and lightness, enhancing the airy, serene ambiance ideal for the maritime environment. They perfectly balance opulence with tranquility. Together, these colors harmonize to create a soothing and luxurious atmosphere that seamlessly blends with the surrounding landscapes. 

What is the design concept?

The design concept of the Mutiara Laut is a harmonious blend of modern luxury and Indonesian cultural authenticity. My goal was to create a space where passengers can travel in comfort and style while deeply connecting with the cultural and natural richness of Indonesia.

By incorporating local materials, traditional craftsmanship, and an aesthetic inspired by Indonesian phinisi ships, the Mutiara Laut offers a unique sailing experience that celebrates the history and beauty of the Indonesian archipelago. This design approach ensures that the yacht provides not just a voyage, but an immersive cultural journey. 

What was it that drove you to transform these inspirations into a new concept?

My inspiration to transform these elements into a unique concept for the Mutiara Laut stems from my passion for Indonesia and its exceptional maritime heritage. The Indonesian archipelago is dotted with enchanting small islands that I personally love to explore. I wanted to create a travel experience that allows people to discover these hidden treasures with family or friends, surrounded by luxury and comfort. 

The project is also driven by a desire to preserve and showcase local culture through the design and materials used. My aim was to offer passengers not just a cruise, but a deep immersion into the soul of Indonesia, celebrating its rich traditions and natural beauty.

Where from Indonesia was inspiration for the interiors drawn?

The interiors of the Mutiara Laut draw inspiration from various regions of Indonesia. Bali's unique blend of tradition and modernity influenced the choice of fabrics and patterns, infusing the decor with a touch of its vibrant culture. Sulawesi, known for its phinisi ships, inspired the yacht’s structure and nautical design, reflecting the region's deep maritime traditions. The Lesser Sunda Islands contributed natural materials like rattan, which were integrated into the furniture and decor, enhancing the yacht’s authenticity and tropical charm. These diverse influences combine to create a rich cultural mosaic, enriching the experience for every passenger on board.

Where was the Teak wood sourced from?

The teak wood used for the Mutiara Laut was carefully selected from sustainably managed forests in the Bira region. This area is renowned for producing some of the finest teak in the world, valued for its robustness, weather resistance, and beautiful grain. By sourcing teak from Bira, we support sustainable forestry practices and the local economy, ensuring that the materials used are both exceptional in quality and environmentally responsible.

Are there materials that were locally sourced?

Yes, many of the materials used in the construction and decoration of the Mutiara Laut were locally sourced. Teak wood, harvested from the Bira region, is crafted by skilled naval carpenters from Sulawesi, ensuring both high quality and culturally authentic craftsmanship. Our textiles, including those used in upholstery and decoration, are crafted in Java and Bali, incorporating traditional patterns and techniques to add a rich cultural dimension to the yacht’s interior design. By sourcing these materials locally, we not only enhance the authenticity of the yacht but also support Indonesian artisans and communities. 

Were there any local wildlife that drove inspiration to this project?

The rich and diverse ecosystem of Indonesia has been a significant source of inspiration for the design of the Mutiara Laut. We drew particular inspiration from the coral reefs, reflecting their beauty and complexity in the motifs and color schemes of the interiors, bringing a sense of the underwater world into the yacht’s design. The vibrant colors of Indonesia’s exotic birdlife influenced the decorative touches and color palettes throughout the yacht, adding bursts of vivid color and liveliness. Additionally, the fluid and organic shapes of marine creatures inspired the open and airy design of the yacht’s spaces, creating an environment that feels both spacious and intimately connected to the sea. These elements combine to create an atmosphere that echoes the richness and beauty of Indonesia's natural environment.

Are there any accommodations in the Mutiara Laut that you're most proud of?

I am particularly proud of several features of the Mutiara Laut. The luxury cabins are meticulously designed to offer the utmost in comfort and elegance while incorporating authentic Indonesian design elements. Notably, the Master Cabin includes a private terrace, providing a personal sanctuary with stunning views. The main deck is beautifully arranged, allowing passengers to relax and enjoy breathtaking views of the marine landscape, with shaded areas and comfortable seating perfect for unwinding. The dining room combines exceptional culinary experiences with a richly cultural ambiance, adorned with decor and details inspired by Indonesian craftsmanship. This space not only serves as a place for meals but also as a cultural showcase, enhancing the overall experience of dining on board. These features collectively contribute to making a journey on the Mutiara Laut an unforgettable experience, offering both luxury and a deep connection to Indonesian culture.
